Career : His Journey from Bus Conductor to a Super Star
Rajinikanth worked as a coolie and then started his career as a bus conductor at BTS. He developed his style first here, in issueing tickets and whistling which made him a popular figure with public and other drivers and conductors in BTS. Like the majority, the craze for cinema made him leave the job and join Adyar Institute at Chennai. He began to take part in stage plays after Kannada playwright Topi Muniappa offered him a chance to act in one of his mythological plays.During that time, he came across an advertisement issued by the newly formed Madras Film Institute which offered acting courses. Though his family was not fully supportive of his decision to join the institute, his friend and co-worker Raj Bahadur motivated him to join the institute and financially supported him during this phase.
During his stay at the institute, he was performing in a stage play and got noticed by Tamil film director K. Balachander. The director advised him to learn to speak Tamil, a recommendation that Rajinikanth quickly followed.
In 1975 when he was about 25 years, ace director K Balachander introduced him at Apoorva Raagangal a movie ahead of its time. K Balachander signed him for his banner the next day after meeting him at the Adyar Institute. That was an opportunity of the lifetime because K Balachander has created a whole new generation of actors including Kamalhasan by then.
K. Balachander, who is constantly referred to by Rajinikanth as his own guru or mentor. The following year, he acted in his first Kannada film, Katha Sangama, directed by Puttanna Kanagal. Though Rajinikanth refers to director K. Balachander as his "guru" or mentor, it was director S. P. Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajinikanth’s image entirely.
Rajinikanth has acted in a total 190 movies, which includes Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, English and Bengali films. Rajinikanth made a foray into Bollywood with Andha Kanoon but did not make as much of an impact as he had in the south. He still appeared a few films in Hindi, viz. Chaalbaaz, Uttar Dakshan, Geraftaar and Hum.
He also act in Hollywood movie. He made his Hollywood debut with the movie Bloodstone in 1988 with much fanfare in India at the time of its release. However, the movie failed in the United States.
The acceptance of Rajinikanth sans his mannerisms proved he had at last become a "star" from a "common actor." His film roles were mainly as a villain during the period 1975 to 1977, frequently with Kamal Haasan as the hero, in movies like 16 Vayadhinilae, Moondru Mudichu and Avargal.
During this phase of his career when he was reaching dazzling heights, Rajinikanth abruptly chose to quit acting, but was coaxed back. He started again with Billa, which was then remaked as a blockbuster bollywood movie Don. With its phenomenal success he was accepted as a full-fledged hero.
Rajnikanth has often been referred to as the most popular film actor in South India by the media and audiences. In 2015, a film about his fandom, For the Love of a Man, premiered at the 71st Venice International Film Festival. His popularity has been attributed to "his uniquely styled dialogues and idiosyncrasies in films, as well as his political statements and philanthropy".
Rajinikanth has received numerous awards for many of his films, mostly in Tamil viz. Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, Cinema Express, Filmfans Association for his on-screen performances and off-screen contributions in writing and producing.
His mass popularity and appeal is largely drawn from his mannerisms and stylized delivery of dialogue. He received India's third highest honour, the Padma Bhushan, for his contribution to Indian cinema.
